The Lunar is also quite tough because it’s designed for the rougher environments of commercial espresso machine drip trays.

There’s no point in getting a professional tool and using it for something besides its intended purpose. You can use it for other things, but we can’t recommend this because you can get an equally good general scale from someone else at a much lower price. The Acaia Lunar is specifically for brewing espresso in professional environments. Several of its functions and modes specialize in this, giving it impressive versatility for brewers making many types of coffee.

The Pearl also works better for manual brewing, especially pour-over coffee. It’s an ideal scale for both private and commercial environments anytime you’re trying to brew a great cup of coffee, so this is the best choice for most regular buyers. It works for different types of coffee, it’s durable, and it’s accurate. The Acaia Pearl is an excellent general scale. In other words, there’s not much of a question in the Acaia Pearl vs. How They CompareĬhoosing between these two outstanding scales is surprisingly easy, and it depends entirely on your brewing environment. We don’t have a separate review on the Lunar yet, but it’s a good option for professionals using espresso machines. It’s slightly more enduring than the Pearl, too, with a 27 hour operation time on a single charge. This scale is precise down to 0.1 grams and can accurately weigh up to 2000 grams. Lunar scales ship with a heat-resistant pad, a 100-gram calibration weight, and a charging cable. Its auto-tare function adjusts for cup weights before liquid starts flowing in, ensuring precise measurements every time. While this Acaia scale has a simple weighing mode, its main focus is a flow mode that constantly measures weight as liquid flows into a cup. It’s especially useful in the drip tray of espresso machines, and most of its additional features focus on supporting that. Last Update: Īcaia’s Lunar is an espresso scale for commercial environments. Even they advise, online, to purchase from an Authorised Reseller at home, as the scale has to go back to the supplier for any repairs or servicing, even if that’s overseas. If you click this link and make a purchase, we earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Don’t be tempted to buy it in the USA, where it’s cheaper, as I almost once did, as there’s VAT and import duty, on top, as with Acaia’s own European Webshop. All in all, I’m glad I came across HCR, and made the decision to purchase the Lunar 2021. I’m now awaiting the arrival of another bag, some Nova and the Single Origin Coffee Selection. I ordered a bag of Workhorse at the same time, which is a very pleasant, espresso blend. They offered it at a good price, so I took the plunge. I stumbled across HCR in the Authorised Retailers page on the Acaia website. My shots have improved dramatically, and dialling in is no longer tedious. I use weigh mode and mode 4, and have turned off the other 5 modes (easy in settings), so that I don’t have to scroll through them. It’s well built, feature rich, and I’m able to use it on the drip tray of my Londinium 1. Although the Brewmaster App is disappointing, which I’d heard before my purchase, the Acaia Lunar 2021 scale is first rate.

I decided to bite the bullet and treat myself to an early Xmas and birthday gift. For some reason, my dialling in new beans was always difficult, and wasteful, even with my excellent Niche Zero grinder.

Thereafter, I got by with my excellent, Tanita kitchen scales and the timer on my iPhone or iWatch.

They either broke after a short time, or were returned within a trial period. I’d thought about buying one of these, for years, but it seemed extravagant, so I bought 3 cheap scales, over the years, that were always, affordable, but plasticky, rather erratic and unreliable.
